HOMEWORK CHALLENGE: Designing my own Challenge under Service in School and Community

Hello,

I have completed another one of my Homework Challenges. I designed my own challenge under Service in School and Community. I went to my Nana's Resthome, Cedar Manor. I went upstairs with her and helped her and other elderly with their games of Housie. Every Friday they all pay $2 and the winner of each game gets $2 back. So it depends on how many turn up as to how many games are played. I helped call out the numbers and also helped out the elderly with their bingo cards as some of them had trouble hearing.

It really is just a fun time when they can all meet, have a friendly game of housie and chat and catch up with the news and keep in touch.

Unfortunately, I could only get one photo of the "Manor Lounge" sign where we all played.

HOMEWORK CHALLENGE: Completing a Maths Grid in Under 5 Minutes

Hello Everybody,

Over the first term I completed a randomised grid in under 5 minutes. The first few times I did it, it felt tough but as I kept going I slowly increased. The first time I tried I couldn't even complete the grid but then on my last one, I got 100% correct in under 3:25 minutes. Soon I will be trying it under 2 minutes and hoping for the best. In Term 3 I will upload a photo of this test if I get around to it (:

For now, here are some of the scanned tests:

HOMEWORK CHALLENGE: Exhibition Review!

Hello Everybody,
Once again I have finished one of my homework challenges.

Over the weekend, I went to an exhibition and reviewed it. I went to the Tauranga Art Gallery in Willow Street. I had a look at the art of Jeff Thomson who uses Corrugated Iron. I learned that some of Jeff's other work included the corrugated elephant that sits outside the main entrance to Auckland Zoo.

The first sculpture I looked at was a Corrugated Car, just in front of the foyer. The design around the whole car was covered in Corrugated Iron except for the wheels and the windows (see picture). It was a fully working car and able to drive and was a vintage car, used in the old days. I thought this was a great piece of art. Just over by the window was a corrugated baby Giraffe. It was so life like!

The second piece of art I looked at was the Mauao Art Displays. There were many pieces of art even from back in the early day's of New Zealand. Some were done by the early Europeans. They are beautiful paintings and quite a unique bunch of artworks. There was also a little projection room to the right of the exhibition room. As you walked in, there was pieces of old artwork, projected to look like it was moving. There was a stereo in the corner making sounds to make it seem like you were standing right there in the artwork. It was another amazing chance to see how unique the art was and showed us great parts of Mauao. I even recognised some of the walkways when I walk around the Mount.

Upstairs was more Jeff Thomson work. The third piece of at was Corrugated Weaves. It was once again Corrugated Iron but I thought it was amazing how Jeff could twist and bend it and it was a piece of iron! Even though this Iron is specially made I still thought it was seriously unique. It was all different colours which must have taken a while to mix together.

The fourth and final piece of art I saw was a house. The plan of how he was going to make it was sitting on top of a small glass ledge, made out of cardboard. He followed the plan very careful and made a perfect fully scaled house pretty much exactly like his model except he forgot the chimney. Besides the chimney it was amazing, truly amazing.

There was alot more sculptures like dogs and chickens and mailbox designs all made out of Corrugated Iron and also a video to show how he made it. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to have a sneak peak at it but I know he makes it with great effort and great concentration. I thought it was an amazing and rare opportunity to look at well thought out ideas and it was great.

I would definitely recommend everyone going to see the exhibitions. It is definitely something different and also something that would appeal to kids of all ages!

Thanks.

SCIENCE FAIR COMPLETE!

Hey Guys,

I have finished my Science Fair! The presentation and results have been glued on ready for the judging. I'm really glad I have finished and even though I didn't paint or colour it it still looks great. My topic was "Does Sight or Smell Affect Taste". It was a fun topic and the best part was that I got to eat the leftovers! Na i'm kidding. It was a great project.

Thank you

Week 5 Update

Hey Guys,

This week I started my Science Fair Testing. My Science Fair project is to find out if Sight or Smell affects taste. I started on my Brothers and my Nana. I don't really have enough information yet but I am going to do some taste testing at school.

Also this week we learned about Helium and Hydrogen Atoms. These include Protonss, Neutrons and Electrons. Your probably wondering what that is? These are all sources of particles. An electron is a negative. A proton is a positive source. A neutron is a source that can run without any electric change.

Its been a pretty good week so far. This year is gonna be an awesome year with Room 30.

Bye Everyone (:

Homework Challenge #1

For the Rimu Homework Challenge I made my own challenge in the category of "Giving".

I went to my nanas at the beginning of April this year and helped her pack up her 3-bedroom house as my dad was moving her in to a 2-bedroom villa at Cedar Manor retirement home in 6th Ave.

When we were packing her house up she knew she had to down size. What we did for her was we got some boxes and packed things like spare cutlery, spare kitchen appliances and storage, some towels and sheets and spare clothes from my grandad, who passed away just last year. We delivered these items to the Salvation Army, Waipuna Hospice shop and St.Vincent De Paul as they give to the people that are in need.

What the Salvation Army, Waipuna Hospice and St. Vincent De Paul do, is they have a proud history of helping people.  They gather items such as furniture and miscellaneous items and sell them cheap to people locally to raise funds for their charity work. My Nana helped out alot as she donated many items to the charities. I also helped mum and dad go through some of our cupboards to find stuff we could donate. We ended up donating some furniture and some of my baby clothes and old toys.
